• the 3000 rivers, 3 million lakes and 10,686 kilometers of Alaskan coastline provide many fishing jobs, either within the Commercial fishing sector or the Subsistence fishing sector
• commercial fishing is done purely for profit and since the 1870s has grown to employ 1 in 10 Alaskans
• 78,500 jobs are provided here and add US$6 billion annually, although the jobs are seasonal
• native americain communities rely on fish for food, oil for fuel, clothing and making tools which is subsistence fishing
• both industries are considered to be sustainable
