• castro leaves Cuba

• Castro + 81 supporters return to Cuba known as the ‘los barbudos’ attacking government and important figures. 2 yr guerrilla war


  1956
• Batista (cubas controller at this time) power weakens. Castro enters and takes power (1959)
• Castro willing to work with Eisenhower then declined. Turns to ussr who gives Cuba loans and oils

• usa declares embargo on Cuba, banning businesses and trade between Cuba and USA


  1961
• bay of pigs

• plan for bay of pigs

  • cubans who are against castro would invade Cuba at the bay of pigs, 70km away from where they would attack cubas defences
  • US airforce would then join them
• invasion FAILURE! 😾

  • kennedy changes mind to use US airforce as he thoight it would break international law
  • 17th april 1961- bay of pigs launched without planes, many captured and exposed
• consequences of bay of pigs 1961

  • made Kennedys position look weak and inexperienced
  • celebration for castro
  • cubas alliance with ussr strengthened
  • increase tension between superpowers
  • khrush seeing this as an oppurtunity to spread communism throughout Latin America.
