    Middle class attending private school are two years ahead of state schools. Working class do not have access to these resources so cannot be equal in content.
  • National statistics online
    35% of working class apply to a Russell group university. Most apply for average universities to avoid rejection from their middle class peers. They may not fit in or have to pay back finances showing cultural and material deprivation.
  • Douglas (1970)
    5000 children - working class parents showed less interest in children's education, visited schools less, paid less attention and did not stimulate their children with educational toys and activities for thinking and are less likely to read to them. This would increase intellectual development.

  • New Right - working class subculture:
    • Lack of parental interest reflects subcultural values of working class.
    • Hyman - system of values of working class creates obstacles for improvement.
    • Sugarman - fatalism, collectivism, immediate gratification, present-time orientation.
    • Murray - negative working class subculture (underclass)
  • Material Deprivation
    Links poverty and social class as the working class are more likely to have low incomes and inadequate housing. This causes overcrowding, temporary accomodation, distrupted education, cold/damp housing, ill health, more absences and poor nutrition (Hierarchy of Needs). Children from poorer homes are more likely to have emotional or behavioural problems. They lack equipment, resources and miss out on experiences.
  • Cultural Capital- Bourdieu (1984)
    Sullivan (2001) measured capital in 465 year 11 students to find strong links between cultural capital, parents and children.
    Gewirtz (1995) - 3 main types of parents - privileged-skilled choosers, disconnected-local choosers, semi-skilled choosers.
