Anaerobic respiration

Cards (6)

  • Bioprocessing
Bioprocessing is the use of enzyme-controlled reactions to produce a product
  • Immobilized Enzymes
Enzymes that are attached to each other or an inert material.
  • Bioreacter
A container or vessel where biological reactions occur using living cells to make specific products.
  • Events in lactic acid fermentation
Pyruvic acid cannot be broken down into CoA in the absence of oxygen, so NADH breaks down instead and releases the one proton and two electrons it had trapped
The released electrons and protons are added to the pyruvic acid to form lactic acid
This is known as a reduction reaction
  • Why does lactic acid fermentation occur in our muscles?
Our cells require much more oxygen for respiration than what we can produce. This causes muscle stiffness and cramps.
  • Events in alcohol fermentation
NADH molecules produced in glycolysis are broken down to release the electrons and protons that were trapped
The electrons and protons add to the pyruvic acid to form ethanol
