How does it work

  • Single transferable vote (STV)
Proportional system used in Northern Ireland and Scottish local government elections
  • How the STV system operates
    1. There are six seats available in each constituency
    2. Each party can put up to six candidates
    3. Voters put candidates in order of preference
    4. Voters can choose candidates from different parties
    5. Winning candidates are elected by reaching a quota calculated as VOTES+SEATS+1
    6. First preferences are counted for each candidate
    7. Candidates who achieve the quota are elected automatically
    8. If no one reaches the quota, the candidate with the least first preferences is eliminated and their second/subsequent choices are transferred
    9. If a candidate reaches the quota, the second/subsequent preferences from the elected candidates' ballot papers are added to the other candidates
    10. This process continues until six candidates have achieved the quota and are elected
  • Voters rank candidates in order of preference To get elected, a candidate must receive a set number of votes, known as a quota
