limestone

Cards (14)

  • hazards of quarrying
    • increase in traffic
    • destruction of landscapes
    • regular blasting produces excessive noise and dust
    • dust and vehicle pollution can lead to an increased number or respiratory conditions
  • advantages of quarrying
    • vital building material
    • provides employment
    • supports the local economy
    • better local road system
  • limestone is used as
    • a building material
    • cement. by heating limestone with clay.
    • an ingredients in toothpaste
    • a food additive to provide calcium ions
    • processed as a useful raw material in the chemical industry
    • to neutralise acidic soil so plants can grow more effectively.
  • limestone is the industrial name of calcium carbonate (CaCO3)
  • quicklime is the industrial name of calcium oxide (CaO)
  • slaked lime is the industrial name of calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2)
  • limewater is the industrial name of calcium hydroxide ( Ca(OH)2 )
  • Investigating the Thermal Stabilities of Carbonates
    1. Record the mass of an empty boiling tube using the balance
    2. Add approximately 2g of calcium carbonate
    3. Record the mass of the boiling and the calcium carbonate
    4. Heat the carbonate over a roaring Bunsen burner flame for approximately 5 minutes
    5. Allow to cool and record the mass of the carbonate and boiling tube again
  • Repeat this method with
    1. Copper carbonate
    2. Sodium carbonate
  • Carbonate
    • Calcium carbonate
    • Copper carbonate
    • Sodium carbonate
  • Ackace metals
  • when you add a few drips of water to quick lime you can see the chip break apart and bubble and steam forms
  • when a compound breaks down when heated to form two products it’s called thermal decomposition
  • calcium hydroxide is used to treat soils as it is an alkiali and also neutralises acid in soils
