cytoplasm/cytosol: liquid portion of cell made up of salts, water and organic molecules. gives cell its shape and holds other organelles inside the cell.
cell membrane/plasma membrane: controls what goes in and out of the cell, made of phospholidbilayer > made of two layers of fat called lipids
nucleus: stores DNA and controls cell activity. is membrane bound
mitochondria: produces energy, has DNA, and is surrounded by a double membrane
smooth endoplasmic reticulum (smooth ER): membrane bound organelle with tube-like structure that produces lipids and detoxifies cell. network of cisternae
rough endoplasmic reticulum (rough ER): membrane bound, covered in ribosomes and produces proteins to be exported out of cell. stack of cisternae
ribosomes: not membrane bound, sticks to rough ER, made of proteins and rRNA. makes proteins
golgi apparatus: membrane bound, processes and packagesproteins from roughER to plasma membrane so it can be released out of cell. stack of cisternae.
vesicles: transport materials
lysosomes: membrane bound, made of proteins and rRNA. destroys proteins and toxins, uses acidicenzymes to break down waste
centrioles: not membrane bound, made up of microtubules and assists in celldivision and formation of cell structures
cell wall: only in plant cells, outermost layer of plant cell providing strength, support, protection and shape for the cell. made of cellulose and other proteins
vacuoles-
in plants: large membrane bound organelle to maintain cell shape, provide nutrients and maintain water balance
in animals: have smaller and more, used to handle wasteproducts
chloroplasts: thylakoid discs inside it contain chlorophyll, which absorbs light energy for photosynthesis and gives plants its green colour.
