  • 1: The targeted address is sent to the memory address register
  • 2: The targeted address is sent down the address bus to main memory
  • 3: The control unit sends a signal (eg a read signal) along the control bus to main memory
  • 4: The contents stored in memory at the target address can be send along the data bus to the memory data register
  • 5: The contents of the memory data register are copied to the accumulator, and the instruction is now complete
