Neo-orthodoxy

• Neo-orthodoxy means new orthodoxy - it refers to theologians such as Barth, Niebuhr and Tillich
• However, many of those who are given the label neo-orthodoxy reject the label. They reject the Bible's legitimacy as modern studies of the Bible reveal that some parts are not true as there are historical and scientific errors, aswell as contradictions
• Contradictions in the Bible example

  Mark 10:11 - Jesus says that anybody who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her

  Matthew 19:9 - Jesus says that anyone who divorces his wife - except for marital unfaithfulness - and marries another women, commits adultery
• Barth - The Bible is not the word of God, but contains the Word of God
• Barth held the view that other religions were humanities attempt to reach God, whereas Christianity is God's attempt to reach humanity
• God does not reveal himself in the Bible but he revealed himself through Jesus
• Reading the Bible we all know we are sinners and we need forgiveness - we feel the presence of God the forgiver in Jesus
• Barth says that God can be experienced through scripture
