  • The authority of the Church is derived from Scripture
  • Matthew 16:18-19 - Jesus tells Peter he is the 'rock' on which the Church will be built
  • The Catholic view rests on the Apostolic Tradition and Apostolic Succession

The Bible and the Church have equal authority since they are linked through the Holy Spirit. The Apostolic Tradition is tradition that stems from Jesus commanding the Apostles to preach the gospel. The Apostolic succession is the chain of leadership
  • The Protestant view

Based on the doctrine of Sola Scripture - developed by Martin Luther during the Protestant reformation. Luther was concerned people were picking parts of the Bible to proclaim as true or false. This is a problem as it changes the word of God. Church teaching must be in line with the Bible, if it isn't it is false
