  • what is CBT?
    Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
    • Beck - based on both behavioural and cognitive techniques
    • process consists of 5-20 weekly/fortnightly 30-60min sessions
    • makes client aware of their negative views and how they interact, and then challenges them by asking for evidence (reality testing - see if views are consistent with reality) to break negative triad
    • behavioural activation - client asked to do activities which they've been avoiding to empower them
    • client given homework to try to reinforce this
    • unconditional positive regard - client feels valued in space
  • what is REBT?
    Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy
    • Ellis - extends ABC model to ABCDE(F) model (containing dispute, effect and feelings)
    • central technique - identify and dispute patients irrational thoughts
    • challenges client to prove beliefs, and replace them with more reasonable statements, by using empirical, logical and pragmatic arguments
    • unconditional positive regard - Ellis recognised importance of giving client respect and self-worth
