  • What is meant by a softwood?
    A type of wood that derives from a tree with needle-like leaves and seeds in a cone. Most softwood trees are evergreen, meaning they have leaves all year. Softwood trees grow quickly, and can be used for timber after about 30 years. This makes them cheaper than hardwood timber
  • What are two types of softwoods?
    Pine and Cedar
  • What are the advantages, disadvantages and uses of Pine?
    Advantages: Lightweight, easy to work with, affordable.

    Disadvantages: Can warp/crack/splinter more than other woods
    Uses: House construction (for roof joints & floorboards), furniture, doors & interior woodwork
  • What are the advantages, disadvantages and uses of Cedar?
    Advantages: Natural oils make it resistant to water and fungal growth, insect-resistant & aromatic.
    Disadvantages: Expensive and not as strong
    Uses: Outdoor furniture, fences, sheds & boats
