statins

• cholesterold is an essential lipid but too much of LDL cholesterol can cause health problems e.g fatty deposit inside arteries and coronary heart disease
• statins are drugs that can reduce amount of LDL present in the blood stream slwoing down rate of fatty deposit forming
• statin advantages:

  1. reduce the risk of strokes, CHD and heart attacks
  2. statins increase the amount of HDL cholesterol which can remove LDL from the blood
  3. statins may help prevent other diseases
• statin disadvantages:

  1. long term drug that must be taken regularly
  2. negative side effects e.g headaches memory loss
  3. takes time for the effect to kick in
