artificial heart

• artificial hearts are mechanical devices that pump blood and are a temporary fix until a donor heart is found or help a person recover by allowing the heart to rest and heal
• mechanical hearts are less likely to be rejected by the immune system
• Disadvantages:

  1. surgery to fit an artifical heart can lead to bleeding and infection
  2. parts of the heart could wear out or the electrical motor could fail
  3. blood flow is not smooth which can cause blood clots and stroke, drugs to thin blood have to be taken
