nervous system

Cards (3)

  • The nervous system
A specialised network of cells in the human body and is our primary internal communication system. Two main functions:
    • collect, process and respond to info in the envi
    • Co-ordinate the working of diff organs and cells in the body
    Divided into 2 sub-systems:
    • Central nervous system (CNS)
    • Peripheral nervous system (PNS)
  • The nervous system 2
    The central nervous system
Made up of brain and spinal cord
    • The brain is the centre of all conscious awareness. The outer layer, the cerebral cortex, is highly developed in humans and is what distinguishes our higher mental functions from those of animals. Divided into two hemispheres.
    • The spinal cord is an extension of the brain. Responsible for reflex actions.
Passes messages to and from the brain and connects nerves to PNS.
  • The nervous system 3
    The peripheral nervous system
Transmits messages via neurons to and from the central nervous system. Is subdivided into:
    • Autonomic nervous system (ANS) governs vital functions in the body such as breathing, heart rate, digestion, sexual arousal and stress responses.
    • Somatic nervous system (SNS) controls muscle movement and receives info from sensory receptors.
