  • what is an ion?
ions are charged particles that has gained or lost electrons, resulting in a positive or negative charge, they can be single atom or a group of atoms
  • when metals form ions what happen?
lose electrons from their outer shell to form positive ions
  • when non metals form ions what happens?
gain electrons into their outer shell to form negative ions
  • which four groups are most likely to gain or lose electrons and how many?
    group 1-loses 1 electron = 1+ ion
    group 2-loses 2 electrons = 2+ ion
    group 6-gains 2 electrons = 2- ion
    group 7-gains 1 electron = 1- ion
  • in an ionic equation what side does the electron have to be on if it’s being lost?
    right side= Na ➡️ Na+ + e-
  • in an ionic equation what side does the electron have to be if it’s been gained?
    left side= Cl + e- ➡️ Cl-
  • if magnesium was losing two electrons what would this equation look like?
    Mg ➡️ Mg2+ + 2e-
