  Sea walls - made of concrete and acts like a barrier

  Groynes - 2 barriers to help with longshore drift

  Gabions - steel wire mesh filled with rock

  Rock armour - lots of big boulders
• What are the 2 problems with hard engineering?

  Expensive

  Often makes coasts look ugly/ unnatural
• What are the examples of soft engineering?

  Beach nourishment - taking sand from lower down the beach and added to the upper part of the beach, creates wide beaches and slows down wave energy

  Beach stabilisation - placing vegetation to stop sand from moving

  Wetland creation - removing sea defences and allowing the land to flood which protects the land from flooding and erosion
