Coastline management

Cards (2)

  • What are the 4 main approaches to shoreline management plans?
Do nothing - carry out no coastal defences except safety measures
Hold the line - use sea defences to stop erosion, the coast stays where it is today
Advance the line - move the existing defence seaward
Retreat the line - gradually let the coast erode, and move businesses and people away from areas at risk
  • Why are some places not protected from flooding?
The value of the land and buildings may not justify the cost of protection
Building defences might cause more erosion elsewhere
Climate change is likely to bring rising sea levels
