  • Techniques that aid in the development of literacy:
    • Reading, the most effective (exposure to words both phonetically and written)
    • Visuals (connect words with images or events as they paint a picture in student’s mind)
    • Mapping (shows relationships between words)
    • Rhyming sounds
    • Syllabification (break up into syllables)
    • Sight words (word recognition)
  • Tapping Prior Knowledge: one of the most effective for developing literacy
    • Validates students’ personal experiences
    • Activates Funds of Knowledge
    • Respects students’ background
    • Acknowledges students have a contribution to make in the classroom
  • Semantic Mapping: Visual strategy used to develop vocab and knowledge
    • Groups words together
    • Requires activations of prior knowledge
    • Shows important components and the relationship amongst these components
    • Ex. grouping words students know associated with Las Vegas together
  • Word Analogies: a comparison based on similarity between 2 things, like "hot and cold"
    • Shows relationship amongst words
    • Comparison must be antonyms, or words that are opposite of others
    • Synonym: work and employment are synonyms
    • Descriptive - an illustration of a word
    • Part to whole - explaining a word in context of the concepts or of others
    • Item to category - an example of a category, such as coffee being in the category of beverages
