Digestive System

Cards (8)

  • Digestion is a simple process where large insoluble food particles are broken down into smaller water soluble molecules, so that they can be absorbed by our blood and give energy to the other organs in our body.
  • The digestive system consists of the mouth, oesophagus (food pipe), stomach, small intestine, liver, pancreas and large intestine
  • The Esophagus allows the passage of material from the mouth and the throat to the stomach.
  • The Stomach holds the food and mixes it with acid and enzymes that continue to break the food down into liquid or paste
  • The small intestine helps to further digest food coming from the stomach.
  • The liver purifies the blood containing newly absorbed nutrients.
  • The pancreas produces enzymes that help to digest food, particularly protein.
  • The Large intestine absorbs water and electrolytes, producing and absorbing vitamins, and forming and propelling feces.
