  • Avtgis (1998) carried out a meta-analysis of studies of the LoC and found External LoC people tend to be more easily influenced and conforming than those with Internal LoC.
  • Shute (1975) exposed undergraduates to peers who expressed either pro-drug or anti-drug views on drug taking. Undergraduates with Internal LoC: conformed less to expressing pro-drug attitudes (moving from anti-drug attitudes). This supports the idea that having an Internal LoC increases resistance to conformity.
  • The assumption that situational and dispositional factors are entirely separate is questionable.
For example, in the Milgram situation the 35% who resisted may have a personality that means they are more likely to resist (e.g. internal) but they may have also been influenced by something in the situation (e.g. proximity to victim or authority figure).
