Required Practicals

Cards (3)

  • Specific Heat Capacity Required Practical Method
    1. Measure and record the mass of the copper block in kg
    2. Place a heater in the larger hole in the block
    3. Use a pipette to put a small amount of water in the other hole
    4. Put the thermometer in this hole
    5. Switch the power pack to 12V. Switch it on
    6. Record the ammeter and voltmeter readings
    7. Measure the temperature and switch on the stop clock
    8. Record the temperature every minute for 10 minutes. Add your results to your table
    9. Plot a graph of each metal against change in temperature in °C
  • What is the method for investigating I-V characteristics in a lamp?
    1. Place ammeter and variable resistor in series
    2. Place voltmeter in parallel across the lamp
    3. Voltmeter measures potential difference across the lamp
    4. Ammeter measures current through the lamp
    5. Record these values in a table
    6. Adjust variable resistor and record the new readings on the voltmeter and ammeter
    7. Switch direction of battery, values should be negative
    8. Repeat to get a range of readings
  • Thermal Insulation Practical Method
    1. Place a small beaker inside a larger beaker
    2. Use kettle to boil water
    3. Transfer 80cm3 of the hot water into the small beaker
    4. Use a piece of cardboard as the lid for the large beaker
    5. Lid should have a hole for a thermometer
    6. Place thermometer through the hole of the lid
    7. Record the initial temperature of the water and start a stopwatch
    8. Record the temperature of the water every 3 minutes for 15 minutes
    9. Repeat the experiment using the same volume of hot water
    10. But this time use an insulating material to fill the gap between the two beakers
