  • Positive sporting impacts are increased participation, gives the population a sense of identity and pride, increase sports funding, raise awareness of health and fitness, lead to facilities development, guaranteed inclusion for the host country and can raise a countries status on the world stage.
  • Negative sporting impacts are the raised profile is short lived, participation may decrease post event, venues may become unused due to maintenance cost, negative sporting news and a lack of funding to certain teams.
  • Positive social impacts are money brought into the country/local community, promote nation building, benefits of new sporting facilities, improved transport systems, olympic athlete housing can be turned into homes and inspired participation of residents by role models.
  • Negative social impacts are people being displaced due to development, prices increasing during event period, event given more attention than long term issues, benefits may not be relevant to many and cause resentment and positive effects may be short lived.
  • An example of a successful games was London 2012. It boosted the economy, foreign investment and participation. It created many new jobs and facilities. These facilities are still in use today. For example the olympic pool is used for primary school swimming lessons.
  • An example of an unsuccessful games was Athens 2004. They spent way more than budgeted (twice the amount). Many facilities are now untouched and in disrepair. Greece is now in economic recession, suffering from a loss of jobs, homes and international commercialisation.
  • Positive economic impacts are increased tourism bringing money to the local economy, more jobs created lessening state benefits and increased income tax, the shop window effect creating strong trade links and regenerating funding improving the local area.
  • Negative economic impacts are the expense of bidding, games putting the country into debt, raised taxes, house prices increasing pricing many people out, employment benefits are temporary and the olympic legacy is often unfulfilled with facilities left in a state of disrepair.
