  • Life under the Nazis
    The political, economic, and social crises caused by the Treaty of Versailles and made worse by
    the Wall Street Crash and subsequent Great Depression of the 1930s, had given Germany the
    insurmountable task of achieving some stability which the Nazis promised. The impact of
    communism in the 1920s and 1930s in Europe also meant that many countries’ economies
    were impacted by labour disputes and political strife
  • France in the 1930s:
    Centralist government delayed impact of Great Depression but
    when it did hit French economy, a corruption scandal in 1934
    led to instability and Far Right protests and far left counter
    protests in Paris.
    Eventually, to avoid a similar case of the Nazis in Germany,
    Centrists and Left-wing groups become the Popular Front.
    1936 Matignon Accords gave the working class more holidays;
    constant pay increases (7 to 12%); and legal right to strike.
  • The Nazi Economy (1933 – 1939)
    Hitler promised to fix the German economy once in power. The damage caused by Versailles to
    the damage caused by the Wall Street Crash, led to mass unemployment and millions of men
    with no purpose.
