Henry VII Domestic Policy

    Cards (5)

    • Dealing With War
SK1 = Married Elizabeth of York + created tudor rose - united the houses
SK2 = Backdated his reign to the day before Bosworth so he could punish those who fought against him as traitors - kept Earl of Surrey in prison until 1489 once Henry was satisfied with his loyalty. Earl of Northumberland was kept in prison until 1485 when he was given control of the north and the chance to prove his loyalty - punished them but also gave second chances
CSK = Still animosity from Yorkists e.g. 1486 Lovell Conspiracy from prominent Yorkists Francis Lord Lovell and the Stafford brothers

SK2 = 1485 Acts of Attainder made Henry the main land owner - Duchy of Lancaster said he increased land income by 10 times
CSK = 46 out of 183 Attainders were reversed
CONSENSUS = Were only reversed if they had proven loyalty and even then a fine was paid to Henry e.g. Thomas Tyrell had to pay £1,738
    • Treatment of Nobility
SK1 = Bonds and recognisances = promises of good behaviour/recognition that a debt was owed e.g. Thomas Grey ordered to pay a recognisance of £1000 in 1492 as he was not trusted by Henry
SK2 = 1504 Proclamations ensured nobles had to get licences to retain or risked £5 a month fine for every illegal retainer e.g. in 1506 Lord Burgavenny was fined £70,550
CSK = Henry failed to stamp it out, but it did reduce. Nobles were secretive and no written records exist of illegal retaining
    • Dealing with Yorkists
SK1 = Marrying Elizabeth of York and creating tudor rose - unified houses
SK2 = Was able to get Philip of Burgundy to surrender Edmund de la Pole in March 1506 and Henry imprisoned him - eliminated the threat
CSK = Philip only surrendered De la Pole after extracting £138,000 from Henry
CONSENSUS = Eliminated threat even if at the cost of finances
    • Laws on Overmighty Subjects
SK1 = Bonds and recognisances = promises of good behaviour/recognition that a debt was owed e.g. Thomas Grey ordered to pay a recognisance of £1000 in 1492 as he was not trusted by Henry
SK2 = 1485 Acts of Attainder 183 were issued -  Henry became the main land owner which improved his finances but also decreased power of nobility as they could no longer dominate local areas
CSK = 46 out of 183 Attainders were reversed
CONSENSUS = Only reversed as loyalty was proven - Henry still fulfilled aim of reducing threat
