  • Emic - investigation of a culture from within that culture. Firsthand.
  • Etic - theoretical idea that is assumed to apply to all cultures. They are universal.
  • Cultural relativism - all cultures are worthy of respect.
  • Ethnocentrism - the idea that your own culture is “normal”, therefore viewing other cultures as abnormal.
  • AO3 Cultural Bias - the US Army IQ test was tailored for people of the US, meaning other cultures didn’t perform as well. This created negative stereotypes for other cultures.
  • AO3 Cultural Bias - Emic and Etic distinction is positively used to research psychology. Emic emphasises the uniqueness of every culture, and Etic seeks universals. All cultures need to be understood.
