  • explain how the gills of a fish are adapted for efficient gas exchange
The gills have lots of gill filaments that have lots of gill lamellae, this provides a large surface area therefore there will be more diffusion. The lamellae have thin walls, therefore they have a short diffusion pathway, so more diffusion. The lamellae are also surrounded by a network of capillaries these are also very thin so there is also a short diffusion pathway. They also have counter current flow which maintains a concentration gradient.
