Homogeneous Mixtures and Heterogeneous Mixtures

Cards (8)

  • Homogeneous Mixtures - type of mixture that has uniform composition and properties - components are spread out evenly all throughout
  • Two components of Homogeneous Mixtures:
    1. Solvent - more abundant in solutions - dissolving medium
    2. Solute - less amount in solutions - the substance being dissolved - breaks apart into very small pieces and get evenly distributed
  • Types of Solutions:
    1. Liquid Solutions - Liquid is the solvent
    2. Solid Solutions - Solid is the solvent
    3. Gaseous Solutions - Gas is the solvent
  • Liquid Solutions:
    • solid-liquid (salt water)
    • liquid-liquid (vinegar) solute: acetic acid
    • gas-liquid (carbonated drinks) solute: carbon dioxide
  • Solid Solutions:
    • solid-solid (alloys, brass, bronze)
    • liquid-solid (amalgam) solute: mercury solvent: silver
  • Gaseous Solutions: (air) solvent: nitrogen
  • Suspension:
    1. Tea with Ice
    2. Ketchup
    3. Mustard
    4. Tap Water
  • Colloid:
    1. Black Coffee with milk
    2. Mayonnaise - emulsion
