Differentiating Mixtures and Compounds

Cards (10)

  • Compounds are combination of molecules (atoms of the elements form bonds to combine and make up these) mixed chemically - have specific mass ratios
  • Mixtures are combination of two or more pure substances (either elements or compounds) mixed physically - have variable mass ratios
  • Chemical reaction - process by which the atoms of one or more substances are rearranged to form different substances
  • Melting - application of heat to a solid to liquid
  • Dilution - addition of water, or other solvents, to reduce concentration of solution
  • Emulsion - heterogeneous liquid-liquid mixture - mixing two immiscible liquids - rely on stabilizing agents (emulsifiers )
  • Stirring - increases the speed at which a solute dissolves in a solvent
  • Heating - raising the temperature of the solvent
  • Crushing - reducing the particle size of solid-solid
    • Decomposition reaction - type of chemical reaction in which a single compound breaks down into two or more elements or new compounds - separation of compounds - involve energy source (heat or electricity)
