Central Nervous System (CNS) - Serves as the main processing center of the entire nervous system. It consists of two main components: Brain and Spinalcord
brain - functions as organizer and distributor of information for the body
brain
cerebrum
cerebellum
brain stem
cerebrum - upper part of the brain that controls avtivity and thoughts
cerebellum - controls muscle coordination, balance, and posture
brain stem - controls automatic functions of the body, such as breathing and heart rate
peripheral nervous system
somatic nervous sysyem
autonomic nervous system
somatic NS - sensory and motor neurons that connect the CNS to the body
autonomic - involuntary or unconscious; relating to the autonomic nervous system
spinal nerve - nerves that carry motor and sensory signals between the spinal cord and body
cranial nerve - carries information into and out of the brain stem
parasympathetic - maintains body function and restores body to normal or relaxed mode
sympathetic - activated when the body is in dynamic role or stress
