• institutionalism: a place such as a hospital or orphanage, in places with limited emotional care
• strength of roman orphan studies: application to improve the living conditions for childrens - chance to develop normal attachments
• weakness: current lack of data on adult development = do not know long-term effects of what being in an institution can do in adulthood
