  • Reason for appeal:
    • There was an error of law
    • There was an error of fact
    • There was a procedural unfairness
  • Appeals from the County court:
    • If the case was heard by a District Judge in the County court then the appeal is to the Circuit Judge in the same County court.
    • If the case was by a Circuit judge in the County court then the appeal is to a High court Judge in the High court
    • There is a possibility of a second appeal from either of these two appeal hearings to the Court of Appeal. However only allowed in exceptional cases as set out in Section 55 of the Access to Justice Act 1999 such as that the appeal would raise an important point of principle or practise.
  • Appeals from the High court:
    • From high court, appeals usually go to the Court of Appeal. In rare cases, there may be a 'leapfrog' appeal direct from the High court to the Supreme court - since 2015, for an appeal it must be of national importance for this to happen.
    • there is a further appeal from the court of appeal to the supreme court of one of these two courts gives permission
