Each intercostal nerve runs along inferior border of rib corresponding to its segment. They travel in the intercostal spaces, positioned between the internal and innermost intercostal muscles.
They are accompanied by intercostal artery and vein, forming the neurovascular bundle.
Intercostal nerves branche
muscular branch: supply intercostal m: transversus thoracis and serratus
sensory branch: Supply intercostal muscles and parietal pleura.
lateral cutaneous branch: Arise near mid-axillary line, supplying the skin of the lateral thoracic and abdominal walls. Divides into ant and post divisions.
Anterior Cutaneous Branches: Terminate near sternum, supplying skin of anterior thoracic and abdominal walls.
communicating branch: connects with thoracic sympathtetic ganglia
