  • The humanistic approach assumes people have free choice over their behaviour, whereas the psychodynamic approach assumes that behaviour is determined by unconscious factors.
    Determinism
    • Humanistic appraoch - assumes behaviour is affected by our desire to self-actualise, experiences act as a barrier to this through conditions of worth and varying experience of conditional positive regard (nurture)
    • Similarly, the psychodynamic approach assumes behaviour is driven by unconscious forces e.g. id, ego and superego (nature) but our coping and defense mechanisms arise from experiences (nurture)

  • Both are much less scientific compared to other approaches but the psychodynamic asusumes that some behaviours can be investigated scientifically.

  • Rogers believed that counselling (utilising unconditional positive regard) can be used to help clients solve their problems and conditions of worth and enable their potential for self actualisation, whereas Freud believed that psychoanalysis can lead to improvements in clients through psychotherapy.

  • Psychodynamic is reductionist.
    Humanistic is Holist - you have to understand every aspect of a person to understand them as a person
