Energy & energy transformations

Cards (17)

  • The law of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred from one form to another.
  • Energy is the ability to do work
  • There are two types of energy: potential energy (stored) and kinetic energy (moving).
  • Types of energy: mechanical, heat, thermal, light, chemical, sound & electrical
  • Mechanical energy is stored in objects due to their position or motion
  • Mechanical energy - It is the sum of energy in motion and stored motion by an object. All moving objects possess mechanical energy
  • Electrical energy - It is the energy possessed by moving electrons that lights the bulb, works all appliances.
  • Chemical Energy It is an energy stored in bonds of chemical compounds, like atoms and molecules. Ex: batteries, food, fuel, matchsticks, fireworks, medicines
  • Heat Energy - It is an energy in transit (transferred from one body to another).
  • Thermal Energy - It is an energy due to the movement of molecules. Ex:Sun
  • Sound Energy - It is an energy produced by vibrating objects
  • Radiant or Light Energy - It is a form of electromagnetic radiation produced by hot objects that can be seen by the human eye. It travels through a medium or empty space.
  • Energy can be changed from one form to another such as chemical energy into mechanical energy, heat energy, and many more.
  • physical change - is a change in properties such as texture, shape, or state
  • chemical change - represents the formation of a new substance after atoms are rearranged in a chemical reaction.
  • Exothermic Reaction - A type of chemical reaction that produces heat energy.
  • Endothermic Reaction - A type of chemical reaction that absorbs heat energy.
