Variations in places and economies

Cards (5)

  • Gentrification
    • the process that sees low income groups displaced by affluent people eg London
  • The local economy of a place will directly and indirectly affect the income and lifestyle of individuals and communities as well as the identity of a place and how people percieve it
  • Employment sectors
    • primary - obtaining raw materials eg mining, agriculture
    • secondary - manufacturing products
    • tertiary - service industry eg teachers, doctors
    • quaternary - specialist services and information eg law, finance, ICT
  • Employment can be categorised into part time, full time, temporary, permanent, employed and self employed
  • In the UK, tertiary and quaternary jobs increased and so has social mobility which allows more people to access higher education for higher paid and skilled jobs
This has caused placed to become less parochial / people are less tied to their place of birth eg university graduates are more likely to settle in the place they were trained or where they find a job rather than being close to their family
