  • Pronouns replace nouns in a sentence. They are classified based on function and case.
    o Sam is an honor student. Sam likes to study in the library. Sam’s favorite subject is English.
    o Sam is an honor student. He likes to study in the library. His favorite subject is English.
    1. Subject pronouns - I, you, he, she, it, we, they
    ✓ Pronouns that replace the subject (noun) of the sentence.
    • English is my favorite subject.
    • It is my favorite subject.
  • 2. Object pronouns - me, you, her, him, it, us, them
    ✓ Pronouns that replace objects of the sentence
    • Every morning, Mia buys a latte.
    • Every morning, Mia buys it.
  • 3. Reflexive pronouns - myself, yourself, himself, herself
    Reflexive pronouns are used to refer to the same person or thing more than once in the same sentence
    Reflexive pronouns end in -self or -selves
    • Ria recorded Ria while singing.
    • Ria recorded herself while singing.
  • 4. Demonstrative pronouns - this, that, these, and those
    ✓ Replace a noun or a noun phrase
    • This is my lunch.
    • Those look delicious.
  • 5. Possessive Pronouns
    ✓ Indicate possession or ownership
    • I talked about my new article.
    • Hers was the most intriguing piece of news.
  • 6. Interrogative pronouns - how, what, when, where, which, who
    ✓ Questions words - we use interrogative pronouns to represent the information we are asking about
    • Harry is a wizard.
    • Who is a wizard?
  • 7. Relative pronouns - that (restrictive), which (non-restrictive), who (subject pronoun), whom (object pronoun), whose (possessive)
    ✓ Refer back to a noun in the sentence - replace nouns that are already mentioned in the sentence; also introduce a subordinate clause
    • The player who won the competition trained hard.
    • She bought the dress that appealed to her most.
