Multi-store model

• The multi-store model was devised by Atkinson and Shiffrin.
• The assumptions of the model:

  1. there are 3 separate unitary stores of memory
  2. the stores are sensory, short-term and long-term
  3. the model works in a serial fashion

• STM

  coding: acoustically

  capacity: 7 plus or minus 2

  duration: up to 30 seconds
• LTM

  coding: semantically

  capacity: no limit

  duration: lifetime
