  • Prohibition
    Preventing, forbidding, stopping, or disallowing someone from doing something
  • Can't/cannot
    Expresses prohibition, usually gives the idea of something that is against the rules or policy
  • Mustn't/must not
    Expresses prohibition, usually means that it is the speaker who is setting the rule
  • Obligation
    A duty or commitment
  • Have to
    Expresses obligation that comes from someone else, not the speaker, usually referring to a rule or law
  • Must
    Expresses obligation that comes from the speaker
  • Don't have to
    Expresses that there is no obligation, you can do something if you want but it is not a requirement
  • Permission
    Allowing someone to do something
  • Can
    Most often used to ask for or give permission
  • Could
    Can also be used to ask for permission, but not as often as 'can'
  • Prohibition
    • Passengers must not play music or talk on this part of the train
    • You can't rent a car without a credit card
  • Obligation
    • You have to show your ID before you can enter the place
    • I must stand in all requirements before Friday

    • You can sit here, the seat is free
