    • Lesson 2 – Installation of operating system and drivers
  • After going through this module, you are expected to:
  • Learning Objectives

    • Identify and define key terms related to operating systems
    • Determine the different types of operating systems
    • Classify the 3 most common computer operating system

  • Operating System
The most important software that runs on a computer. It manages the computer's memory and processes, as well as all of its software and hardware. It also allows you to communicate with the computer without knowing how to speak the computer's language.
  • Operating System
    • Every computer must have at least one OS to run other programs
    • It helps you to communicate with the computer without knowing how to speak the computer's language
    • It is not possible for the user to use any computer or mobile device without having an operating system
  • What Does an Operating System Do?
It handles input and output devices<|>It communicates with the device's hardware<|>It uses device drivers written by hardware creators to communicate with their devices<|>It sits in between the applications you run and the hardware, using the hardware drivers as the interface between the two
  • Difference between mobile OS and computer OS

Mobile and computer operating systems have been developed in different ways and for different uses<|>Computer OS products are older and more familiar to larger groups of users<|>Mobile operating systems are newer and designed for mobile devices
  • Three most common Operating Systems
    • Microsoft Windows
    • macOS
    • Linux
  • Microsoft Windows
    • Microsoft created the Windows operating system in the mid-1980s
    • There have been many different versions of Windows
    • Windows comes pre-loaded on most new PCs, which helps to make it the most popular operating system in the world
  • macOS
    • macOS (previously called OS X) is a line of operating systems created by Apple
    • It comes preloaded on all Macintosh computers, or Macs
    • According to StatCounter Global Stats, macOS users account for less than 10% of global operating systems
  • Linux
    • Linux is a family of open-source operating systems
    • It is free, and there are many different distributions—or versions—you can choose from
    • According to StatCounter Global Stats, Linux users account for less than 2% of global operating systems
  • Types of Operating System
    • Real-time
    • Multi-user
    • Multi-tasking vs. Single tasking
    • Distributed
    • Embedded
  • Without an operating system, a computer is useless
  • All operating systems, including Windows, serve as a base for computer programs to work off
  • Operating system
Controls the system's hardware, making its internal components and peripherals work across all programs
