  • This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes in the performance of Dressmaking tasks.
  • The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course.
  • Module 1 contains one lesson, namely: Lesson 1 - Principles and Elements of Design
  • After going through this lesson 1, you are expected to:
    • Identify the principles and elements of design
    • Enumerate principles and elements of design
    • Apply the principles and elements of design by creating a sleeping garment design
  • Proportion
    A relatively harmonious relationship between various elements in construction with regards to size and color. It is said to be proportion as your design is visually in line with the size shape and height of the wearer, and the collar, placket, pocket, sleeve, hemline, etc. are designed appropriately/proportionally.
  • Types of Balance
    • Symmetrical
    • Asymmetrical
    • Radial
  • Symmetrical balance
    Similar elements on one side of a garment correspond to the other side of a garment. They may not be as identical but are similar weighted objects on both sides.
  • Asymmetrical balance
    Arrangement of elements of design unequally distributed on the garment. It is more elaborate than symmetrical balance.
  • Radial balance
    Arrangement of elements of design towards the center point/focal point. This leads the viewer's eye on the elements of design which are scattered out from a center point in a circular way.
  • Emphasis
    Principles of design which instantaneously grab the attention of the eye's viewer. The contrasting area was easily noticeable. The contrast line, shape, texture, and colors call attention.
  • Rhythm
    Repetition of elements of design, when applied creatively it can enhance the look of a person. The easiest way to achieve rhythm is by repeating in an organize way the elements of design like lines, shapes, color etc. within a space.
  • Harmony
    Relationship of the different portion of a design. It is also known as unity. It refers to the overall look of a garment. All elements of the design are being combined and have a sense of whole completeness.

  • Line
    Forms the direction or feeling of design. It can direct the eyes to a certain part of visions or draw it away from a specific area of the body. It can be categorized as vertical, horizontal, diagonal, and curved.
  • Form/Shape
    Lines that join produce the form or shape of an object. Triangles provide stability to the garment while curved shapes soften the contours of objects.
  • Texture
    Surface quality of an item detected by how we see and feel it. Rough textures can add ruggedness to the clothing while smooth textures add a formal look.
  • Color
    • Primary colors: Red, Blue, Yellow
    • Secondary colors: Orange, Green, Violet
    • Tertiary colors: Red-Orange, Yellow-Orange, Yellow-Green, Blue-Green, Blue-Violet, Red-Violet
  • Color Wheel
    A systematic hue circle that one uses to guide color mixing and color design decisions.

  • Elegance is not standing out but being remembered for style or design. In dressmaking, you will be given a chance to learn and understand about on how to create a design of sleeping garments.
  • Principles and elements of design has a big part in choosing the appropriate sleeping garment for an individual. To make you look good for the viewer's eye or even choose the proper garment for you.

  • Adjacent/Analogous Color Scheme
    Colors complement the colors beside them in the color wheel
  • Complementary Color Scheme
    Consists of colors that are opposite of each other
  • Split Complementary
    A variation of the standard complementary color scheme. It uses a color and the adjacent colors of its complementary
  • Triad Color Scheme
    Any three colors that form a triangle on the color wheel
