  • When inspecting the tools/equipment in the work area, consider the following
    • Tools and equipment are kept clean
    • Storage areas are clean, tidy, and organized
    • Tools and equipment are free from dust, grease, and other substances
    • Tools and equipment are in good condition and designated locations when they are not using them
    • Cutting tools and equipment are kept sharp
    • Tools and equipment did not scatter within the working area
    • Sharp-edged or pointed tools are kept in sheaths, not in workers' pockets
    • Use the right tools and equipment for the job
    • Use tools and equipment within their design limitations
    • Damaged, defective, and worn tools and equipment are tagged and removed from service until repaired
  • Safety Precautions to Follow When Using Tools and Equipment
    • Do not operate power tools and equipment unless you have proper training
    • When working at heights, use a bucket or bag to hoist tools from the ground
    • Use a toolbox when carrying pointed tools, and do not put them in your pocket
    • Report damaged tools and equipment immediately
    • Carry power tools carefully and not by their cables
    • Do not play with hand the power tools
    • Compressed air guns should not point at yourself or another person
    • When using a power tool, never leave it unattended
    • Electric power tools and equipment must be double-insulated
    • Electric tools and equipment should be repaired only by qualified persons
  • Work Area Safety Precautions
    • Floors are clean, dry, free from debris, clutter, and trip hazards
    • Walkways and aisles are clear and unobstructed
    • Entrance and exit areas are not blocked
    • Lighting levels are adequate, and work areas are free from glare
    • Workers trained in the use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
    • Portable fire extinguishers: appropriate type, readily available, and inspected
    • Fire exit doors: in good repair, unlocked and free from obstruction
    • Fire/emergency alarm systems operational; fire exit signs
    • First aid kits: supply inventory; treatment log; first aid training manual
    • Store gasoline in an approved safety container

  • Sort
    Eliminate clutter and clear up space by removing things that don't belong in the area
  • Set in Order
    Organize the work area so each item is easy to find, use, and return
  • Shine
    Attack the dirt and grime that inevitably builds up and works to keep it from coming back
  • Standardize
    Write down what is being done, where, and by whom, to incorporate the new practices into normal work procedures
  • Sustain
    Continuing commitment to follow the decisions that have been made and continually return to the earlier steps of 5S
  • 5S originated with Japanese inventor Sakichi Toyoda - the founder of Toyota, also known as the "father of the Japanese industrial revolution"
  • Carrying screwdrivers or other tools in your back pocket can injure you and may damage upholstery
  • Failure to remove a ring, bracelet, or watches before going to work could cause a short circuit which would give you an electric shock
