  • Lesson 4 – Basic and Common Hand Tools in Leathercraft
  • Tools are very important in making a leather craft project that's why we need to be familiarized with every tool to be used. The precautionary measure must observe while using it. Understanding and knowing the appropriate tools will help and make us easier when making a leather project.
  • Pencil
    Used for preparing patterns and design
  • Skife
    Used for trimming leather edges to be joined
  • Skiving Knife
    Used for cutting leather and for thinning edges of the leather
  • Shears
    Used to cut leather. This is a sturdy tool that we can use to cut thick medium or thin leather

    Used for laying out projects and measuring leather
  • Spoon and Tracer Modeling Tool

    Used for tracing designs on leather and for compressing leather

    Used for tracing designs on leather
  • Wood Mallet
    Used to attach snap buttons and rivets, and for stamping backgrounds
  • Ball Modeling Tool
    Used for compressing small areas of leather
  • Deers Foot and Double Line Marking Tool
    Used for backgrounds and for marking a line as a guide to lacing
  • Revolving Spring Punch
    Used for punching holes through the leather. This punch has six punching cylinders of variable sizes
  • Snap Button Set
    Used for attaching sigma and birdcage snap buttons
  • Edge Beveler
    Used to cut away a portion of the edges of leather in preparation for your use of edge creaser
  • Edge Creaser
    A small groove is made at variable distances from the edges of the leather depending upon the size of the edge creaser you use
  • Spacing Wheel
    Used for marking equidistant spaces on leather before punching holes for sewing
  • Awl
    Used for punching small holes through leather at the points marked by the spacing wheel
  • Harness Needle
    Used for stitching pieces of leather together
  • Thonging Chisel
    Used for punching slits through leather is preparation for lacing
  • Fid
    Used for opening thong slits
  • Embossing Wheel

    Used to produce a continuous decorative design along edges of leather not to be laced
  • Eyelet Setter
    Used for setting eyelets this tool has a taper at one end which is to be inserted into the eyelet and tapped with a small mallet
  • Swivel Carving Knife
    Used for incising or partway cutting through the leather. You can produce deep tooling and stamping of designs by using this tool

    Used to scribe and divide lines, gauge uniformity
  • Gouge
    Used to cut grooves in leather. The leather is grooved so it will fold properly
