Cards (12)

  • Respiratory system
Series of organs responsible for taking in oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide
  • Respiration
Body's process of taking in oxygen and eliminating gaseous waste products
  • Respiratory tract
Part of the body involved in the process of respiration
  • Parts of the respiratory tract

    • Upper respiratory tract (nose, nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx)
    • Respiratory airways (larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles)
    • Lower respiratory tracts (trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, lungs)
  • Functions of the respiratory system
    • Breathing - movement of air
    • Sound protection- create sound waves
    • Gas exchange - oxygen and carbon dioxide
    • Olfactory assistance - sense of smell
    • Protection - from dust and microbes entering the body through mucus protection, cilia, and coughing
  • Respiratory system process
    1. Air enters through nose
    2. Filtered and moistened in nasal cavity
    3. Passes through pharynx
    4. Enters larynx (voice box)
    5. Travels through trachea
    6. Divides into bronchi
    7. Bronchi divide into bronchioles
    8. Oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange in alveoli
    9. Oxygen enters bloodstream
    10. Carbon dioxide expelled
  • Diaphragm
Muscular sheet below the lungs that controls breathing
  • Oral cavity

Replaces nasal cavity function when needed
  • Trachea
    Also known as the windpipe
  • Breathing
Physical act of inhaling and exhaling
  • When lungs inhale
    Diaphragm contracts and pulls downward
  • When exhaling
    Diaphragm relaxes and moves upward
