Multi Store Model of Memory

Cards (5)

  • Multi-Store Model of Memory
A psychological theory that was first proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin in 1968
  • Multi-Store Model of Memory
    • Proposes that there are three distinct memory stores in the brain: sensory memory, short-term memory (STM), and long-term memory (LTM)
  • How the Multi-Store Model of Memory works
    1. Sensory memory: Initial, brief storage of sensory information
    2. Short-term memory (STM): Information from sensory memory that is attended to is transferred to STM, which can hold a limited amount of information for a short time (about 20-30 seconds)
    3. Long-term memory (LTM): If information is rehearsed or repeated, it can be transferred from STM to LTM, where it can be stored indefinitely
  • The transfer of information from one store to the next is not automatic, but requires attention and effort
  • The Multi-Store Model of Memory has been influential in understanding memory, but it has also been criticized for its simplicity and inability to fully explain all aspects of memory
