Lab Safety and Scientific tools

Cards (26)

  • Eye wash - use if a chemical spills or splashes into your eye
  • Thermal tongs or Mitts - use these to handle hot equipment such as beakers and flasks. Hot glass looks the same as cool glass
  • Fire extinguishers - use to put out electrical, chemical, or gas fires
  • Fire blanket - use to smother a fire on a person or small surfaces
  • Safety shower - use only if a chemical is spilled directly on clothes or skin
  • Beaker - looks like a glass cup with a spout at the top rim to make pouring liquids easy
  • Erlenmeyer flask - looks like a beaker but it's narrower at the top
  • Volumetric flasks - are rounded at the bottom and have a long, skinny neck.
  • Stoppers - are usually rubber top that fit into flasks or test tubes
  • Test tube - a glass tube that's rounded at the end. Think of it as a long, hollow finger
  • Test tube brush - used to clean out the inside of test tubes
  • Funnels - are cone-shaped objects with stem. They are used to help pour liquids or solutions from one container to another
  • Filter paper - a piece of round, flat paper that is used for filtering solids or precipitates to separate them from liquid or solutions
  • Graduated cylinder - used to measure liquids or solutions and is fairly accurate to the 0.1 place
  • Meniscus - the curved surface of the liquid
  • Pipette - a long, thin tube with a suction attached. This allows you to draw up the correct amount of liquid, check the measurement on the side, and transfer the liquid to another container
  • Burette and stand - a long, thin pipe with a valve and a stopcock at the end
  • Bunsen burner - used for heating things. it is an open flame that is fed by a gas line
  • Ring stand - a circle of metal attached to a stand that can hold beakers or flasks up in the air when supported by a wire gauze or clay triangle
  • Hot plate - it's for heating things, but unlike the Bunsen burner, it does not have an open flame.
  • Electronic balance - used to measure the mass of a substance
  • Double pan balance - used to compare the weight of two different objects.
  • Weighing boat or weighing paper - used to hold the substance to be massed
  • Scoopulas and spatulas - small metal or plastic curved tools to help transfer solid substances from one container to another
  • Mortar and pestle - used to grind larger pieces into powder.
  • Thermometer - used for measuring temperature, usually in Celsius
