Root

• Root cap - the protective layer of cells at the tip of the root that helps the root penetrate the soil and protects the delicate growing tip.

  
• Root hairs - tiny, finger-like projections that grow from the root's surface and greatly increase the root's surface area for absorption of water and nutrients.
