  • What is social roles?
refers to parts we play within our various social groups,eg work, home or with friends
  • Conclusion of Reicher and Haslam(weakness of Zimbardo)
Found that in order for the individual to truly adopt the role, internalisation must occur and it needs to become a part of your identity.
  • What happened in the Reicher and Haslam study?(weakness of zimbardo)
    15 men-guards or prisoners
chosen with jobs and characters in mind to see different responses of those from  variety of backgrounds.
intendd to see the impact of different levels of poweer on how people behave and the mental effect of those involved.
  • What are dispositional factors?
individual or personal characteristics of a person that may affect how they behave and conform
  • What are situational factors?
external influence which can impact a child or young person's life.

process of depriving a person or group of positive human qualities.
  • What is deindividuation?(consequence of zimbardos study)
where an individual loses their identity and acts as one within a group or crowd. This may cause anonymity.
  • What did Zimbardo suggest?
deindividuation can lead to negative behaviour.
People feel less accountable due to 'following' the crowd and they feel it reduces likelihood of being identified.
  • weaknesses of Zimbardo's study
    unethical
no 'protection from harm',consent issues, deception
    only male pps
    not repeatable.
  • Strengths of zimbardo's study
real life application-changed the way US prisons are run, young prisoners are no longer kept with adult prisoners to prevent the bad behaviour perpetuating.
debriefing-pps were fully debriefed about the aims and results of the study, despite deception and informed consent being breached.
Issues regarding ethical guidelines meant that future studies that were carried out became much safer and less harmful due to legally bound rules
  • What did Zimbardo find>?
Each identified to their role quickly- within days the prisoner rebelled, but this was quickly crushed by the guards who become more abusive.
Dehumanized prisoners- eg walking them in the night to clean the toilets with bare hands.
5 prisoners left early due to physical  and mental torment.
Terminated after 6 days as Christina Maslach convinced Zimbardo that his experiment was inhumane.
  • What was zimbardo's study method?
Recruited 24 'emotionally stable' students determined by psychological testing, and randomly allocated them to the role of 'prisoners' or 'guards'.
'Prisoners' were arrested in their home to increase realism.Finger printed, stripped and given a number with chains around their ankles.
The guards were instructed to run the prison without physical violence. It was meant to last 2 weeks.
  • hat was the aims of Zimbardo's study?
to see how participants conform to their social roles.
