  • Give three stratergies of social influence that can cause social change.
    1.utilising minority influence
    2.encouraging internal locus of control
    3.disobedience to authority
  • How does the snowball effect come into place with the minority?
As they become successful in their attempts to influence the majority,it triggers a snowball effect as the new idea spreads and builds over time, soon becoming the majority opinion.
  • What three factors must minority influence have to drive their point into limelight?
    1.consistency,commitment,flexibility
2.internal locus of control to resist compliance
    3.disobey authority
  • Provide an example of research support for normative influences
Nolan et al(2008)- aimed to see if they could change people's energy-use habits.Researchers hung out messages on the front doors of houses in Claifornia stating that msot residents were trying to reduce energy usage. The control group just asked to 'save energy', with no reference to other people's behaviour. It was found there were significant decreases with the first group, showing conformity.
  • How does minority influence explain change?(+)
Nemeth(2009)-claims social change is due to the type of thinking that minorities inspire. When people consider minority arguments, they engage in divergent thinking. This type of thinking weighs up more options, leading to better decisions and more creative solutions to better social issues.
  • How may the role of deeper processing not play a part in how minorities bring about social change?
Mackie disagrees that minority bring deeper processing, as when we do not agree with a majority, we are forced to think long and hard about their reasoning, as we see them to 'think in the same way as us'.
