  • Examples of Appeasement
    • German rearmament : Britain responded with signing the Anglo-German Naval Agreement in 1935 whereby they allowed Germany to build a navy 1/3 the size of Britain’s. This was giving in to Hitler’s desire to rearm although it violated the TOV.
  • Examples of Appeasement
    • Anschluss : Hitler got local Nazis to create trouble and push for union between Germany and Austria, even sent troops into Austria to “keep order” and pushed for a plebiscite
    • Britain and France did nothing when the Austrian Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg appealed to them to make Hitler withdraw
    • They felt sympathetic towards Germany and believed the two countries could unite if they wanted. The British Foreign Secretary even suggested to Hitler that Britain would not oppose him.
